The Challenge
The Virtual Challenge Meets was created as an alternative for schools to compete in practice competitions without the travel costs associated with in-person meets. They needed a custom software application to register users, distribute materials, collect results, and generate reports.
The Solution & Architecture
Our custom web application, developed using Eclipse RAP, has been a game-changer for the Virtual Challenge Meets. With its intuitive and user-friendly interface, administrators can easily manage the competition, while end-users can seamlessly register and participate in the event. The Tabulator, a key component of the application, has been instrumental in managing the scores of thousands of students each year, with hundreds of users entering data without any glitches.
Initially, the application was hosted on the Amazon cloud, but as part of our optimization efforts, we moved it to a custom server. The application is now running on a Docker container with nginx as a reverse proxy, providing a more efficient and cost-effective solution. The database was also migrated from Amazon SimpleDB to MySQL, further enhancing the performance of the application.
One of the standout features of the Tabulator is its rich reporting capabilities. The administrators can easily tabulate the results of the meet and generate reports with just a few clicks. Additionally, the application comes with built-in functionality for sending reports of the results to users, along with printable PDF certificates for the winners. These features have made the Virtual Challenge Meets an even more engaging and rewarding experience for all participants.
